How the age calculation works

Age is a calendar interval, not simply the number of elapsed days divided by 365. The calculator first counts complete years from the birth date, then complete months, then the remaining days. This reflects the way age is normally stated.

For example, someone born on June 15, 2000 is 25 years, 2 months, and 5 days old on August 20, 2025. The same interval contains 9,197 calendar days.

Birthdays on February 29

For interval calculations, a February 29 anniversary is clamped to February 28 in a non-leap year. Legal rules for when a leap-day birthday is recognized can vary by country or purpose, so verify the applicable rule when the result is used for an official age threshold.

Calendar dates and time zones

The calculator treats each input as a date on a calendar. It does not attach a time of day or convert the date through UTC. That prevents daylight-saving changes and time-zone offsets from shifting a birthday by one day.

Frequently asked questions

Why not divide the number of days by 365?

Calendar years have either 365 or 366 days, and months have different lengths. Dividing by 365 can produce a useful decimal estimate, but it does not produce an exact calendar age.

Does the calculator include the day of birth?

The total is elapsed time between the two dates. A person is age zero on the date of birth and becomes one day old on the following calendar date.
