How to calculate a tip

Multiply the bill before tip by the tip percentage expressed as a decimal:

Tip = bill × (tip percentage ÷ 100)

Then add the tip to the original bill. For an $80 bill with a 20% tip, the tip is $16 and the total is $96. Split among four people, each person’s total is $24.

Choosing the bill amount

Tipping customs differ by country, type of service, and situation. Where tipping is customary, local practice may calculate the tip on the pre-tax subtotal or on the final amount after tax. Check the receipt and follow the convention appropriate to your location.

Also check whether a service charge or gratuity has already been included, especially for large groups. An included service charge may not be the same as an optional additional tip.

Enter tax or service fees separately, then choose whether the percentage applies before or after that amount. The optional round-up setting raises the final total to the next whole currency amount and treats the difference as additional tip.

Splitting the total

The equal split divides both the bill and tip by the number of people. It does not allocate different menu items or individual tip percentages. The calculator keeps full precision during the calculation and formats each displayed amount to the currency’s normal decimal places.

Because currency cannot always be divided evenly into the smallest coin unit, rounded per-person amounts may differ from the displayed total by a cent or equivalent. One person can pay the rounding remainder.

Currency selection

The currency choice controls the symbol and number formatting. It does not convert between currencies or obtain exchange rates. Enter the bill in the same currency you select.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate 20% quickly?

Find 10% by moving the decimal point one place left, then double it. Ten percent of 65 is 6.50, so 20% is 13.

What if no tip is appropriate?

Enter zero percent. The total will equal the bill, and the split will still be calculated.

Does this provide tipping advice?

No. It performs arithmetic only. Customs, employment practices, service charges, and expectations vary widely.
